Crozet, VA 2/21/10

I went to two locations in nearby Crozet, VA for the first time this morning.

The Fair Winds Lane trail leading to the Western Hills community lake was a bit snowy and muddy, but a great place for birding. I saw the following species: Red-winged Blackbird, Fish Crow, Yellow-rumped Warbler, Northern Cardinal, Bluebird, Flicker, Red-bellied Woodpecker, House Finch, Carolina Wren, White-throated Sparrow, Field Sparrow, Canada Goose, and Blue Jay. A Red-shouldered Hawk did a close flyover to see who I was:

In the lake I saw six ducks – I think that they were all Green-winged Teal, but I was on the northwest side of the lake and the ducks were on the southeast shore line. I was looking straight into the sun and seeing their shadowed side.

I then went to Beaver Creek Reservoir – beautiful scenery, but only saw a lone Canada Goose there.

On the way home I saw a Red-tailed Hawk along Route 250 near Brooksville:
