Ivy Creek (Charlottesville) 6/17/10

I have been wanting to do some birding at the Ivy Creek Nature Preserve in Charlottesville, and finally went there this morning, but it was a bit disappointing. I arrived a little after 9 a.m., and stayed until 10:30. I walked 2.5+ miles on the Red, Brown, and Peninsular trails, and only saw some Cardinals and a few eastern painted turtles, and heard some crows and chickadees. I saw more birds when I returned to the parking lot area: a Bluebird, a Blue Jay, a couple of Red-bellied Woodpeckers, a male Common Yellowthroat, another Cardinal, heard a Carolina Wren, and possibly saw a Robin that was deep in one of the trees and then flew away.

Don't know if it was the time of year, time of day, or ???, but it sure made the 20 or so species I have been seeing on the Rockfish Valley Trail a much better location.

Common Yellowthroat

Red-bellied Woodpecker

Eastern Painted Turtles
