Andy pointed out a behavior pattern that I had never noticed before, but saw several times after learning of it. A Tricolored Heron was searching for fish along the bank of a large pond.

A Pied-billed Grebe approached the heron, and seemed to be ushering a small fish away from it and toward the heron.

When the small fish was close to the heron, the grebe swam away. Presumably the small fish was keeping an eye on the departing grebe, unaware of the heron that was waiting to grab it.

Gulp!

I know what the Tricolored Heron got out of this deal, but am not sure what benefit it was to the Pied-billed Grebe??
