Walt Childs called me last night to tell me that he and his wife, Nancy, had been on a drive in the Shenandoah Valley in Augusta County, and had spotted an owl's nest. Walt and I went over there late this morning to check it out. The sky was dark with rain in the forecast, winds were strong, and we were constrained to view far from the nest because of a barbed wire fenced field, and we did not have permission to move closer to the nest from the road. It was a Great Horned Owl, and after a few minutes, an owlet popped up for a stretch. We couldn't tell if there were more than one owlet. Perhaps if we go back during the next few weeks, we will be able to report some more on them.
