Old Trail, Crozet, VA 9/26-27/16

Now that we are getting settled in our new home in Old Trail, I am continuing to explore the local trail system. The afternoon of 9/26 was very dark and overcast, and I needed to use very high ISO settings for my photos, but I saw 27 avian species including 7 warbler species: Magnolia, American Redstart, Cape May, Common Yellowthroat, Tennessee, Black-throated Green, and Northern Parula, as well as my first of the fall Swainson's Thrush and a Yellow-billed Cuckoo. The morning of 9/27 was heavily foggrd in, but when the fog lifted there were sunny skies, and I added another 17 avian species to the two day total. I saw five of the warbler species from the previous afternoon plus two more: Nashville and Palm. I saw two more Swainson's Thrushes and a Gray-cheeked Thrush. So in less than 24 hours, I had 44 avian species within walking distance of my house, and I didn't go to the local ponds to look for ducks and shorebirds, or to the wooded areas near the soccer field to look for sparrows. If this great birding keeps up, I am going to be saving a lot of gasoline by not driving all over the area!
