Old Trail; Crozet, VA 1/7-8/18

The temperatures started to warm here. It was still well below freezing on the 7th, but has climbed slightly above freezing today. I did some birding here in Old Trail both mornings. When I approached the golf course pond this morning, it was making a noise that I have never heard before - something between waves crashing into a pier and recordings I have heard of whales calling. I can only assume that is was ice cracking below the surface. A flock of Canada Geese had just flown over when I got there, and two geese remained.

The highlight of these past two days was our resident Red-shouldered Hawk. I got distant views of it yesterday, and much closer views today.
