Rockfish Valley, Virginia, 5/17/19

I had an early afternoon appointment in Nellysford, and decided to try a little birding on the Rockfish Valley Trail afterwards, even though birding hasn't been very good there the past couple of years. Walt Childs met me at the main trail head, and we birded along the downstream trail and the Glenthorne Loop trail to the bog area. It was really quiet at first, but picked up a bit a little later, and we ended up with 18 avian species, although the trail was never very "birdy." There were a few highlights. We saw two, possibly three, Common Yellowthroats, a Grasshopper Sparrow, and a first for me - a first year male Orchard Oriole in partial adult plumage - it still had some yellow on its underside.
