Old Trail

It was cloudy, cool, and damp all day. Although I ended up with more avian species today than yesterday (41 vs 36), it wasn't nearly as "birdy." I did, however, see 10 sparrow species, and it's been a while since I had a double-digit sparrow day. Even though I saw Vesper Sparrows on three days last week, and 3 Lincoln's Sparrows yesterday, I didn't see either of these two species today. I did see my first of season (in Old Trail) Dark-eyed Juncos. White-crowned Sparrows are returning to the brush at the north end of the soccer field, and they were actively singing to announce their arrival.

I ended up with 4 warbler species today. Yellow-rumped Warblers were along the golf course pond, and bathing in Slabtown Branch Creek. On the trail along the Western Park wetlands, I once again saw Tennessee, Palm, and Yellow-rumped Warblers, and got a quick look at a Common Yellowthroat. These warblers made their way along the grassy slopes south of the plateau, and then down to the brush near the soccer field.

I saw my first of season (in Old Trail) Yellow-bellied Sapsucker. There were lots of Cedar Waxwings. My 41st species of the day was a Blue-headed Vireo.
