I needed to be at home from 10:00 to 10:45 this morning, so I birded here in Old Trail from 9:30 to 10:00, and then again from 10:45 to 12:30, and ended up with 32 avian species and a few other critters. Although we only had about a half inch of rain overnight, a strong storm front moved through the eastern U.S., and some waterfowl decided to hunker down here in Old Trail. I've been seeing a Ring-necked Duck in the pond along Old Trail Drive, and a lone Pied-billed Grebe in the golf course pond. This morning, in addition to the Ring-necked Duck (and a Canada Goose) in the pond along Old Trail Drive, there were four Pied-billed Grebes. There were four Ruddy Ducks in the golf course pond, and a female Hooded Merganser and a male Wood Duck in the secluded pond off the trail up to the junior high.

I saw my first Palm Warbler for 2021 along the soccer field.

It was neat watching a Crow chase a Turkey Vulture.

I ended the hike photographing a Garter Snake. If you look closely (second photo), you can see my reflection in its eye.
