I did four, one to two hour hikes here in Old Trail during the past six days. Early in the week, it was sunny and quite warm with strong winds, and later in the week it was overcast, somewhat rainy, and with seasonal temperatures. This morning (3/11), it was sunny and cool, and with 1 to 3 inches of snow forecasted for tomorrow, I thought this would be a good time to post my sightings. Each day, I logged from 17 to 32 avian species, with 42 avian species for the four outings. The only species that I expected to see, but did not see, was Northern Flicker. Another Old Trail birder reported Hooded Mergansers in the golf course pond, but I did not see them and have not included this species in my combined list.
Many male birds were singing for mates, and some female were building nests. I was interested to see what spring/summer birds might have been blown in with the strong winds. I saw my first of season Tree Swallow, and my first of season Pine Warbler, although I did see Pine Warblers in Hilton Head, SC during February.
