Stoney Creek (Wintergreen) 11/15/10

I filled our bird feeder for the first time this autumn a couple of weeks ago, and am now getting a few species to it: White-breasted Nuthatches, Purple Finches, House Finches, American Goldfinches, Carolina Chickadees, Tufted Titmice, Red-bellied Woodpeckers, and an occasional sparrow. Seed knocked to the ground has attracted Dark-eyed Juncos and Mourning Doves, and a few Bluebirds have landed on the feeder. There may have been a Pine siskin as well.

Almost all of the chickadees around here are Carolina, but there have been recent reports of Black-capped Chickadees in the area. I may have seen one or two of them at the feeder, but need more conclusive photos to make the call.

I went out this morning looking for Black-capped Chickadees, but all I saw were Carolinas. A Great Blue Heron put on a nice show for me. I saw a Hairy Woodpecker in the Allen Creek Nature Preserve, making it my sixth woodpecker species seen here in the past week.
