Stoney Creek (Wintergreen) 8/12/11

I took a different route early this afternoon, and walked along the Deer Run pine forest and then along the east side of Sawmill Creek ponds # 6, 5, and 4. I saw a Red-eyed Vireo eating its lunch, a few Phoebes, Cardinals, Crows, and White-breasted Nuthatches. There were eastern painted and snapping turtles in the ponds.

As I approached the north end of pond # 6, a Great Blue Heron flew away. But it was a Green Heron in pond # 4 that stole the show. When it saw me, it flew a little farther away, and with a stick in it mouth was either showing me its Groucho Marx "say the magic word" duck impression, or perhaps thought that the stick made for good camouflague.
