Blue Ridge Parkway (4/4/15)

Alice and I headed up to the Humpback Rocks pioneer farm and the nearby parking lot at the trail start to look for Woodcocks after the sun set (~7:30 p.m.). We saw a pretty sunset, and deer came out after the sun went down, but we didn't see any Woodcocks. By 8:00 it was fairly dark, and it was cold and windy, so we headed for home.

As we drove along the parkway to route 250, we saw the rising moon that was a brilliant orange color because of its being low in the sky.

Stoney Creek (4/5/15)

I took a short hike in the morning and another one in the afternoon, and saw 33 avian species here. The highlights were some FOS (first-of-season) birds for me - an early season Blue-headed Vireo gathering nesting materials, Chipping Sparrow, and two species that I have already seen elsewhere this year, but not here in Stoney Creek: Northern Rough-winged Swallow and Borwn-headed Cowbird.

A Common Raven that looked like it had been in a street fight was being harassed by a couple of crows.
