Walt Childs, Huck Hutchens, and I did some birding in Augusta and Rockbridge Counties. We started off on Guthrie Road in Stuart's Draft, drove south to Willow Lake in Raphine, west to New Providence Road, circled around to Walker Creek Road, and then north to Swoope. Although we saw 30+ avian species, the raptors stole the show. We ended up with 15 Red-tailed Hawks, 2 Red-shouldered Hawks, and 5 American Kestrels. Willow Lake only had a couple of dozen ducks: Mallards, Hooded Mergansers, Gadwalls, Ruddy Ducks, and a lone Canvasback, as well as one Pied-billed Grebe.
