It was rather overcast this morning, but I had time for a two hour hike here in Old Trail and ended up with 37 avian species. I saw 7 sparrow species (House Sparrow plus those pictured below).

While I was hiking, a hawk flew from the brush near me carrying a small bird in its talons. I couldn't get a good photo of it, but got a few slightly out of focus shots. At first I thought it might have been a Sharp-shinned, as it had a failry squared off tail and they are migrating through the area now in large numbers, but its contrasty head and gray nape imply that it was a Cooper's Hawk. I also saw two Red-shouldered Hawks, but could only identify one of them as a juvenile, as the other flew directly away from me.

I got a very distant view of what looked like a late season Ruby-throated Hummingbird.

There was a small flock of Cedar Waxwings, and one of the juveniles had a dietary induced orange tail tip.
