February 5

The forecast was for rain, but early morning rain had stopped, and it was only cloudy, with rain in the afternoon forecast. I went back to Newport News Park, and my first stop was at the Swamp Bridge. There had been reports of hearing a Virginia Rail there, and I did hear a Virginia Rail grunt display call three or four times, but never saw it in the tall reeds. I did add a few more species to my trip list, and saw a juvenile Bald Eagle there.

It started to rain a little before noon, and I headed back to the hotel. On the way there, a Sharp-shinned Hawk flew in front of my car, bringing my trip list to 45 avian species.
