Old Trail

Once again, there was complete cloud cover with rain in the forecast for the afternoon. But that didn't stop the birds. I logged 32 avian species this morning, and ended up with a three-day total for here in Old Trail of 42 avian species.

There were three Red-shouldered Hawks in Western Park (the Albemarle County park completely within Old Trail). These resident hawks know me, and often let me get fairly close to them.

The third warbler species was near the wetland portion of the park, and in dense vegetation where Lickinghole Creek runs through the park. It took me a while to decide if it was another Nashville Warbler or a rarer Connecticut Warbler. I've seen a few Nashvilles in Old Trail this week, but they were in drier, grassy areas. The bill on this bird looks to be too blunt for a Nashville, and its tail too short for a Nashville. Nashvilles have dark legs with dull yellow soles, whereas Connecticuts have legs and feet that are bright pinkish. I think that this warbler was a Connecticut. I wanted to stick around for better photos, but it started to rain. Comments on species identification are welcomed.
