Old Trail

Avian spring has arrived here in Old Trail. I saw and heard my first of season, male Red-winged Blackbird singing for a mate from a branch along the golf course pond. Today was my first "birdy" day here in Old Trail this February, especially near the southeast corner of Old Trail. I ended up with 26 avian species, including 5 woodpecker species, but not a single hawk or vulture. I saw at least two Pine Siskins. This species winters at irregular locations in the Virginia Piedmont, and normally leaves the area during the first half of May, but I haven't seen this species in Old Trail since November 2020, and wonder if they are already starting to migrate. I relocated the early season Pine Warbler, and may have seen two of them. I saw the Pine Warbler(s?) about 200 feet apart, but it may have been the same bird flying around. However, I also heard two different Pine Warbler songs.
